Avian Field Technician Positions Available for the 2014 Season
AVIAN FIELD TECHNICIAN at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird center.
Location: Washington D.C./MD/VA.
Duration: 3-3.5 months.

Job Description: Skilled field technicians are needed between April-July for a comprehensive study on the contribution of native and non-native plants to urban food webs. This project works within the Neighborhood Nestwatch program (URL: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/ scbi/MigratoryBirds/Research/Neighborhood_Nestwatch/default.cfm) and combines avian ecology, entomology, and citizen science to investigate food resources for breeding birds in suburban backyards with a focus on Carolina chickadees. Daily duties may include bird banding, point counts, foraging observations, nest monitoring, insect/vegetation surveys, data entry, outreach and more. Preferred qualifications: 1) the ability to work independently and keep meticulous notes and notes, 2) accurate color-vision, 3) demonstrated field experience in avian sampling methods, 4) ability to identify eastern birds by sight and sound and woody plants; 5) a valid driver’s license; and 6) the personality to positively interact with the public on a spontaneous (but regular) basis. Applicants with extensive experience handling birds (taking blood samples, target netting, color-banding, aging, nestling handling, etc) are especially encouraged to apply. During the height of breeding season, applicants should expect long hours and a 6 days/ wk schedule. Visits to field sites will require daily commutes in sometimes busy DC traffic conditions. Housing in MD will be provided, and government vehicles will be used for daily travel. Salary will be commensurate with experience. ($325-450/week).
